‘Tall as Trees’ World Premiere at Metro Cinema

25 Mar

Local director, Gil Ponce, a Manila native and now a Seattle resident, debuts his new film just feet away from the UW at the Metro Cinema off 45th. Personally, I like to fandango some afternoons, so do the same for ‘Trees’ times. http://www.fandango.com

Set and shot in the Philippine capital, Manila, where Ponce was born and grew up, the film follows the odyssey of an almost unbearably cute 8-year-old boy, Jude (Carlos Lacana), leaving with his mother to join his Boeing engineer father (Brent David Fraser) for a new life in Seattle.

Ponce whips up a convenient monsoon, which kills his mother and tosses Jude to the indifferent bustle of Manila. Harassed by a teenage bully and adopted by a self-styled artful dodger who has set up home in a wildlife park, this privileged kid manages to marry idealism with survival in scenes that make begging and hustling look almost fun.
