Exhibition opening: “Spirit of Mexico/Espiritu de Mexico: Posada, Political Prints and Folk Retablos”

“Spirit of Mexico/Espiritu de Mexico” is a major exhibition of Mexican graphic art from 1900 to the present, a unique collection that includes Posada’s popular prints, the political art of Leopoldo Mendez and other members of the Taller de Grafica Popular, and prints by Jose Clemente Orozco, Francisco Toledo and others. This art has played a dynamic role in the development Mexico’s modern culture and political identity.The exhibition coincides with the publication of Leopoldo Mendez, Revolutionary Art and the Mexican Print by Deborah Caplow (Art).

Spirit of Mexico also presents retablos, popular devotional paintings that have influenced Mexican artists since the time of Posada.

The exhibition will be open from January 16 to February 16, 2008 at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery at the School of Art Building. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, noon to 4 pm.

Free and open to the public.
