“Body of War” Documentary at Metro Cinemas
Body of War is an intimate and transformational feature documentary about the true face of war today. Meet Tomas Young, 25 years old, paralyzed from a bullet to his spine - wounded after serving in Iraq for less than a week.
Body of War is Tomas’ coming home story as he evolves into a new person, coming to terms with his disability and finding his own unique and passionate voice against the war. The film is produced and directed by Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro, and features two original songs by Eddie Vedder. Body of War is a naked and honest portrayal of what it’s like inside the body, heart and soul of this extraordinary and heroic young man. (From BodyofWar.com)

An interesting component of the website is its “Take Action” section that lists various ways we can show our discontent with the Iraq war, ranging from voting registration to the fight against war profiteering. Check it, and the film, out!

“London Suite” Opening at Bellevue Civic Theatre — May 2 - 10 –
For you east-siders looking for a Friday night!
—————
“London Suite” at the Bellevue Civic Theatre
By Neil Simon
Directed by Rick May
Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
Following in the footsteps of last season’s Plaza Suite, this show takes you across the Atlantic to a lovely hotel in London where, once again, the audience gets a glimpse into the lives of the various people who check in and out of the same suite over a period of time. In his usual style, Simon creates hilarious situations that show how life can be humorous, but also bittersweet.

Hamlet gone wonky! “Living Dead in Denmark” — May 1 - 24 —
Wow. I do not know how to adequately describe the event that follows. All I have to say is, get to it folks! Then to cap off your evening, you can catch Jenna Jameson’s ‘Zombie Strippers’ playing at the Neptune on 45th. What a night!
—————-
Living Dead is the unauthorized action adventure sequel to Hamlet put on by the Pork Filled Players! Blazing Kung fu action(tm)! The walking dead! The immortal Bard (that’s Shakespeare, folks)! A post-apocalyptic Denmark faced with an impending zombie invasion! All stuffed into a blender and set to puree! Only Lady Macbeth, Juliet and a really pissed off Ophelia have a chance at staving off this threat—but will they do or die (and maybe die again for good measure)?!

Ursula K. Le Guin Book Signing — April 30th –
Lavinia, second wife of Aeneas, has only a line or two in Virgil’s Aeneid. Ursula K. LeGuin has decided to give Lavinia a voice of her own in this new novel- Lavinia published by Harcourt.

Excerpt from Lavinia
It was a wonderful thing to be out on the hills and see a great stag come walking calmly from the forest, balancing his crown of horns. He would kneel and put his nose in Silvia’s hand, and folding his tall delicate legs under him, sit there between us while she stroked his neck. He smelled sweet and strong and gamy. His eyes were large, dark, and quiet; so were Silvia’s eyes. That is what it was like in the age of Saturn, my poet said, the golden time of the first days when there was no fear in the world. Silvia seemed a daughter of that age. To sit with her on the sunlit slopes or run with her on the forest trails she knew so well was the delight of my life. There was no one in all that country of our girlhood who wished us any harm. Our pagans, the folk of the plowlands, greeted us from their fields or the doorstep of their round huts. The surly bee-keeper saved a comb of honey for us, the dairy women had a sip of cream for us, the cowboys showed off for us, riding bull-calves or vaulting an old cow’s horns, and the old shepherd Ino showed us how to make piping flutes of oat-straw.
Sometimes in summer as the long day drew toward evening and we knew we should be starting home to the farm, we’d both lie face down on the hillside and push our faces right into the harsh dry grass and the hard clodded dirt, breathing in the infinitely complex smell, hay-sweet and soil-bitter, of the warm summer earth, our earth. Then we were both Saturn’s children. We leapt up and ran down the hill, ran home — race you to the cattle ford!

S&S Duo *Hawaiian Music* — May 2nd —
Take a vacation and relax next Friday with the popular Hawaiian duo. Additionally, Aumakua Records is a fastidious protector of the arts in Hawaii and by coupling local artists with music production, they are fostering a sense of cultural, musical growth long grown stagnant by the failing music education in today’s schools. Good cause, great music– can’t lose!
———–
Slack key guitarist Stephen Inglis and neo-classical pianist Shawn Livingston Moseley are joined by guest artist Lady Cindy Combs, also on slack key, performing a stylistic featuring the Hawaiian songs that have become popular since the renaissance of Hawaiian music in the 1970s. Presented by Aumakua Records.

Call for Entries *Photographic Center Northwest* — application due May 9th —
After seeing such great art work on display at the ArtsExpo(sed) event this Friday, I know a few UW photographers would be viable competitors in this competition.
My favorite photo I saw on sale was this larger print of a young girl with a brunette bob-cut– she was almost out of the frame, walking to the right of the viewer. You couldn’t even see her face. In her hands were a bundle of the purest red balloons, also floating out of the frame. The beautiful colors of both her dark hair and the balloons subdued by the high grass that blurred the majority of the image.
So puzzling, yet enchanting.
