Last year’s Seattle Jewish Film Festival was so popular that the number of days and events have been upped considerably for the 2008 celebration. Opening this Thursday, April 3rd, the festival showcases Jewish identity through an aesthetic lens. SJFF uses the magical medium of film to both entertain and educate moviegoers about complex issues facing Jewish people and world communities alike, while challenging conventional perspectives. SJFF strives to build bridges of mutual understanding between diverse groups by creating forums for engaging in respectful dialogue about timely subjects and concerns.

The Last Scattering Surface
March 28, 2008, 1:33 pm
Filed under: Events, Fine Art, Lecture, Museums | Tags:

Josiah McElheny makes installations and discrete sculptures that explore crucial moments in the development of modernity, its visual and theoretical undercurrents. His interest in the history of modern science finds its fullest expression in The Last Scattering Surface. Working with astrophysicists at Ohio State University over several years, McElheny has created a vivid tangible model of the Big Bang, the explosion postulated to represent the beginnings of organic matter. Characteristically the form also quotes visual culture, specifically the gigantic chandeliers of New York’s arch-modern performance space, Lincoln Center. In celebration of the exhibition’s opening, McElheny will discuss The Last Scattering Surface and the relationships between concepts such as history, fiction, and memory at play in his work.

When he was named a Macarthur Fellow the Foundation described his work as “objects of exceptional formal sophistication, exquisite craftsmanship, and conceptual rigor.”

‘Tall as Trees’ World Premiere at Metro Cinema
March 25, 2008, 1:46 pm

Local director, Gil Ponce, a Manila native and now a Seattle resident, debuts his new film just feet away from the UW at the Metro Cinema off 45th. Personally, I like to fandango some afternoons, so do the same for ‘Trees’ times. http://www.fandango.com

——–

Set and shot in the Philippine capital, Manila, where Ponce was born and grew up, the film follows the odyssey of an almost unbearably cute 8-year-old boy, Jude (Carlos Lacana), leaving with his mother to join his Boeing engineer father (Brent David Fraser) for a new life in Seattle.

Ponce whips up a convenient monsoon, which kills his mother and tosses Jude to the indifferent bustle of Manila. Harassed by a teenage bully and adopted by a self-styled artful dodger who has set up home in a wildlife park, this privileged kid manages to marry idealism with survival in scenes that make begging and hustling look almost fun.

Colman Park Makeover — March 29th —

Bring a frisbee, a peanut butter (jelly optional) sandwich, and some friends to work on cleaning up Colman Park on Lake Washington before the summer crowds begin to muck it all up again.

Come assist the Urban Forestry staff as they continue the restoration of the forest at Colman Park. Typical activities include removal of invasive plants, trail work, and spreading of mulch.

——
ABOUT THE PARK

Colman Park is located just south of the old Lake Washington Floating Bridge. The beach itself is adjacent to Mount Baker Bathing Beach, but is a part of Colman Park.

The beach features grass, big drooping willows, and picnic tables. If you’ve brought along your Frisbee, football, soccer ball, or volleyball, the grass to the north makes a friendly playing ground.
